ACH Alert Scam - November 2009
Random individuals and/or companies may have received a falsified
e-mail with the subject title "Rejected ACH Transaction." This
e-mail appears to be from NACHA - The Electronic Payments Association
telling them that there is a problem with an ACH transaction
they have originated. The e-mail includes a link which redirects
the individual to a fake web page which appears like the NACHA
website and contains a link which is almost certainly executable
virus with malware. See sample below.
Please alert any financial institution and/or company who have questions
about this site and inform them that the e-mail did not originate
from NACHA, the website is not that of NACHA's, and inform them
to not click on the link.

Online Purchasing Pop-Ups Scam - January 2009

Phone Call Scam... Be Aware - November 2008
We have been made aware of a phishing scam in current operation
that has affected AACE FCU. Phones calls are being made using a random
dialer. The recording states the call is being made by Anne Arundel
Credit Union notifying the cardholder their card has been deactivated
and they will need to input the card information in order to
have it reactivated. The fraudsters do not know if the household
they are calling is a member of AACE FCU, they are counting on
the volume of calls being placed to produce the desired results.
They assume the odds are that they will contact some of our members
and some will enter their card information. Apparently this is
a widespread problem and is affecting financial institutions around
the country. It does not appear to be related to a breach but rather
a trolling, random dialer in targeted communities. AACE FCU would
never contact members asking for information we already have.
If you receive one of these phone calls, please do not key in your
account information.
VISA Alert - January 2007
Visa USA has notified financial institutions of a potential compromise
involving account data from all card brands. We urge you to take
all the necessary steps to prevent fraud from occurring on your
debit and credit cards. It is very important to review your account(s)
on a monthly basis (monthly statement), if not daily. Report all
unauthorized transactions to the Credit Union immediately.
NETELLER EMAIL
Please be aware that some members are receiving
emails from NETELLER a pay online service. This is not the Credit
Union's Online Banking product. Please do not respond to this email.
VISA Check Card Usage Alert
Due to recent fraud ulent account activity
originating from foreign countries, all Visa Check Card transactions
from foreign countries have been blocked. If you are planning to
travel outside the U.S., please notify the Credit Union so that
we may modify your account appropriately. Your cooperation in this
matter is greatly appreciated.
Internet/E-Mail Fraud Alert
Below, is an excerpt from the NCUA Web Page concerning the phishing emails
that have recently been received by the general public. For more
information, please visit NCUA’s website at www.ncua.gov.
Recently, there have been multiple e-mail fraud attempts, known
as "Phishing”, that were initiated via e-mail sent to
both the general public and to some credit union members that appeared
to be from NCUA. This false e-mail asked for the recipient to click
on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If
the recipient proceeded to do so, the link directed them to a false
website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN,
along with other personal information.
NCUA does not ask credit unions members for such personal information.
Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and
asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent
attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose
and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail.
If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential
account information, please notify your credit union immediately
of the scheme. You should also change your account’s PIN,
and take any additional action recommended by your credit union
to protect your account.
If you feel that you have received a fraudulent phishing e-mail
purportedly from NCUA please forward the entire e-mail message to
Phishing@ncua.gov
Additionally, you can file formal complaints concerning any suspected
fraudulent e-mail with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC)
at www.ic3.gov.
The IFCC is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
and the National White Collar Crime Center. |
